The new Bexar County rule, in plain English.
When does emissions testing start in San Antonio?
Bexar County becomes a Texas emissions county on November 1, 2026. Inspection stations in Bexar County begin offering emissions tests that day.
Which vehicles need an emissions test in Bexar County?
Gasoline-powered vehicles 2 through 24 years old that are registered in Bexar County must pass an emissions (OBD) inspection before initial registration or registration renewal. Vehicles exempt by law, including electric-only vehicles, stay exempt.
When do I need to get the test?
Not until your registration is due for renewal. You can renew up to 90 days before it expires, and the emissions test has to be done within that 90-day renewal window.
Do I still need a state safety inspection?
Not for most personal vehicles. Texas ended safety inspections for non-commercial vehicles on January 1, 2025 (House Bill 3297). Emissions tests are separate and still required in emissions counties. Commercial vehicles still need a safety inspection.
